Bright green grass across the fields, lawns and roadsides of northern and central Georgia is making those parts of the state look more like Ireland than a typical Georgia in February. Copious rain, coupled with periods of much warmer-than-normal temperatures, is waking up plants early and causing them to green up.

Although you may not have the kind of backyard garden that University of Georgia horticulture Professor Jim Affolter has, you might find many natural and traditional remedies hiding in plain sight in your ornamental garden.

Eleven University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) graduates were recognized on this year’s Bulldog 100 list of the fastest-growing businesses owned or operated by UGA alumni during the 11th annual celebration on Feb. 8 at Sanford Stadium.

Much like their counterparts across the nation, farmers in Georgia have experienced increased rates of suicide and stress over the last decade. More than 400 Georgia 4-H youth, leaders and volunteers visited Atlanta for Georgia 4-H Day at the Capitol, sponsored by Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, on Feb. 6 at the Georgia State Capitol Building and the Georgia Freight Depot. This annual leadership and civic-engagement event connects 4-H youth with Georgia legislators, provides students insight to the legislative process and allows them to thank legislators and donors. Georgia 4-H has participated in 4-H Day at the Capitol for more than 30 years.

Michael Toews has been named assistant dean of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to oversee the Tifton Campus.
